REVIEW: Freedom Road is based on the true-life efforts of Senators Charles Sumner and Thaddeus Stevens to bring political order and racial equality to the post-Civil War South. Muhammad Ali, in a rare acting role, plays an emancipated slave fighting for civil rights in this stirring film. Set in South Carolina, an illiterate runaway slave, Gideon Jackson (Ali), returns home to the sprawling Carolina plantation, his birthplace, after serving as a Union soldier. A self-effacing yet commanding man, Jackson earns respect and trust of his Carwell peers, a community of liberated Blacks and sharecropping Whites, who elect him under Reconstruction Law as a delegate to rewrite the state constitution in Charleston. There Gideon gets a lesson in politics and teaches himself to read and write. Both educations prove valuable to Gideon as he sets out on a hard-fought struggle against intolerance and injustice that’s marked by an uphill battle to buy land.
