Cat. No. 2780: GENE VINCENT ~ LONELY STREET. PEGASUS PEG CD 685. (IMPORT).
GENE VINCENT (VINCENT EUGENE CRADDOCK) WAS ONE OF THE MANY ARTISTS WHO PIONEERED ROCK’N’ROLL AND ROCKABILLY. HIS 1956 TOP TEN HIT, “BE-BOP-A-LULA”, IS CONSIDERED A SIGNIFICANT EARLY EXAMPLE OF ROCKABILLY. GENE’S CHART CAREER IN THE U.S. WAS BRIEF, HOWEVER, IN THE U.K. HE WAS SOMEWHAT A BIGGER STAR, RACKING UP EIGHT TOP 40 HITS FROM 1956-1961. DURING THE 1960s HE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO REIGNITE HIS CAREER AND RECORDED ALBUMS FOR SEVERAL DIFFERENT LABELS. HIS LAST STUDIO ALBUM WAS “THE DAY THE WORLD TURNED BLUE” FOR KARMA SUTRA IN 1970. THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE ALL LIFTED FROM THESE LATER ALBUMS AND INCLUDE RE-RECORDINGS OF SEVERAL OF HIS HITS. GENE VINCENT DIED AT THE AGE OF 36 ON OCTOBER 12, 1971, FROM A COMBINATION OF A RUPTURED ULCER, INTERNAL HAEMMORHAGE AND HEART FAILURE.
