TOMMY OVERSTREET'S FIRST RECORDINGS WERE MADE IN THE ROCKABILLY VEIN SO POPULAR IN THE LATE '50s AND EARLY '60s. HE RECORDED FOR ROULETTE RECORDS AS WELL AS OTHER SMALL LABELS IN AMARILLO, TEXAS AND MINNESOTA. AFTER PLAYING CLUB DATES IN TEXAS, HE MOVED TO NASHVILLE IN 1967 WHERE HE OBTAINED BOTH A JOB AND A RECORDING CONTRACT WITH DOT RECORDS: AS REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL MANAGER, HE GAINED VALUABLE BUSINESS EXPERIENCE, AS A RECORDING ARTIST, HE HAD TWO SMALL HITS AND THEN BROKE OUT IN 1971 WITH "GWEN (CONGRATULATIONS)", A TOP FIVE ENTRY ON THE COUNTRY CHARTS - AND A CROSS-OVER TO POP.
IN 1979, AFTER A STRING OF SUCCESSFUL RELEASES, TOMMY LEFT DOT AND MOVED TO ELEKTRA WHERE HE HAD A NUMBER OF FURTHER HITS. BY THE EARLY 1980s, TOMMY WAS FOCUSING HIS EFFORTS ON INCREASINGLY POP-ORIENTED MATERIAL SUCH AS "RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET", "DOCK OF THE BAY" AND "KEY LARGO" WHICH ARE INCLUDED ON THIS RELEASE ALONG WITH HIS EARLY DOT RECORDINGS.
