Cat. No. 2881: BOB DYLAN ~ BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME. COLUMBIA / SONY 190759045.22
BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME IS THE FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM BY BOB DYLAN RELEASED IN 1965. IN A MAJOR TRANSITION FROM HIS EARLIER SOUND, IT WAS BOB'S FIRST ALBUM TO INCORPORATE ELECTRIC INSTRUMENTATION, WHICH CAUSED CONTROVERSY AND DIVIDED MANY IN THE CONTEMPOARY FOLK SCENE.
THE ALBUM IS SPLIT INTO TWO DISTINCT HALVES: THE FIRST HALF OF THE ALBUM FEATURES ELECTRIC INSTRUMENTATION IN WHICH BOB IS BACKED BY AN ELECTRIC ROCK AND ROLL BAND. THE SECOND HALF FEATURES MANILY ACOUSTIC SONGS. THE ALBUM ABANDONS THE PROTEST MUSIC OF BOB'S PREVIOUS RECORDS IN FAVOUR OF MORE SURREAL, COMPLEX LYRICS. IN SPITE OF THIS THE ALBUM REACHED #6 ON BILLBOARD'S POP ALBUMS CHART, THE FIRST OF BOB'S LPS TO BREAK INTO THE US TOP 10. IT ALSO TOPPED THE UK CHARTS LATER THAT SPRING. THE FIRST TRACK, "SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK BLUES", BECAME BOB'S FIRST SINGLE TO CHART IN THE US, PEAKING AT #39.
BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. SEVERAL OF THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM HAVE BEEN COVERED BY OTHER ARTISTS AND TAKEN TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS INCLUDING "LOVE MINUS ZERO/NO LIMIT" (ROLLING STONES / THE TURTLES), "MR. TAMBOURINE MAN" (THE BYRDS) AND "IT'S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE" (GRAHAM BONNET).
