REVIEW: ANZACS - Remembering Our Heroes is a series of 15-minute documentary specials, produced by NITV to pay tribute to the military efforts of Indigenous people. As a part of their Remote, Regional and Emerging Initiative, NITV produces at least ten documentaries per year to enable Indigenous communities to build on the stories of First Nation’s men and women that have served for Australia.

The Directors and Producers are from all across the country and their home-grown documentaries will spotlight Indigenous stories through touching personal accounts and family memories.

 The 11 programs feature:

  1. James Canuto from the remote community of Yarrabah.
  2. Dale Kerwin researching Aboriginal heroes of the Boer War.
  3. Mr. Stephens, a 100-year old veteran from the Torres Strait Light Infantry.
  4. Sergeant Donald Taylor now working with the Defence Indigenous Affairs Unit.
  5. Reginald Saunders, the first Aboriginal commissioned officer.
  6. Warrant Officer Gary Thompson of the RAAF.
  7. Gary Oakley, a Vietnam veteran and liason officer at the Australian War Memorial.
  8. Colin Watego, the third generation of his family involved in the defence forces.
  9. Uncle Roger “Bushfire” Saunders, proud Vietnam veteran.
  10. Napau Pedro Stephen, Mayor of Thursday Island and navy veteran.
  11. Local Rockhampton diggers share their experiences.
