Cat. No. VV 1073: TOMMY SANDS ~ STEADY DATE WITH TOMMY SANDS. CAPITOL RECORDS T848.
USED VINYL RECORD. PART OF A COLLECTION NOW UP FOR SALE.
TOMMY SANDS (THOMAS ADRIAN SANDS) BEGAN WORKING IN SHOW BUSINESS AS A CHILD. HE WAS GIVEN A GUITAR BY HIS FATHER WHEN HE WAS EIGHT YEARS OF AGE AND WITHIN A YEAR WAS PERFORMING TWICE WEEKLY ON A LOCAL SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA RADIO SHOW. AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS TEENS YEARS HE MOVED WITH HIS FAMILY TO HOUSTON, TEXAS. WHERE HE JOINED A BAND WITH JIMMIE LEE DURDEN AND BILLY RENO CALLED "JIMMIE LEE DURDEN AND THE JUNIOR COWBOYS" AND PERFORMED ON RADIO, COUNTY FAIRS AND DID PERSONAL APPEARANCES. HE WAS ONLY 15 YEARS OF AGE WHEN HE WAS SPOTTED BY COLONEL TOM PARKER AND HAD HIM SIGNED TO RCA RECORDS.
SANDS' INITIAL RECORDINGS ACHIEVED VERY LITTLE IN THE WAY OF SALES BUT IN EARLY 1957 HE WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAR IN AN EPISODE OF "KRAFT TELEVISION THEATRE" CALLED "THE SINGING IDOL". HE PLAYED THE PART OF A SINGER WHO WAS SIMILAR TO ELVIS PRESLEY, WITH GUITAR, POMPADOUR HAIR AND EXCITABLE TEENAGE FANS. ON THE SHOW TOMMY SANG A SONG CALLED "TEENAGE CRUSH" WHICH WENT OVER BIG WITH THE YOUNG AUDIENCE AND WAS RELEASED AS A SINGLE BY CAPITOL RECORDS. IT WENT TO NUMBER 2 ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 AND NUMBER 1 IN THE CASHBOX CHART EVENTUALLY REACHING GOLD RECORD STATUS. HE RELEASED HIS DEBUT ALBUM "STEADY DATE WITH TOMMY SANDS" IN 1957. TOMMY LATER APPEARED IN THE FILM VERSION OF "THE SINGING IDOL" TITLED "SING, BOY. SING" WHICH WAS A TOTAL FAILURE. TOMMY RELEASED SOME MEMORABLE RECORDINGS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS BUT FAILED TO REACH THE STATUS OF "TEENAGE CRUSH". HE LATER CONCENTRATED ON AN ACTING CAREER.
THIS ALBUM IS AN ORIGINAL AMERICAN PRESSING. THE SLEEVE IS HEAVY DUTY CARDBOARD BUT DOES NOT HAVE A LAMINATED FINISH HENCE THERE IS WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS "RUBBING WEAR" BOTH FRONT AND BACK OTHER THAN THAT THERE ARE ONLY MINOR SIGNS OF DAMAGE INCLUDING A SLIGHT CREASE IN THE FRONT OF THE SLEEVE AND SOME SOILING BOTH FRONT AND REAR. THE RECORD IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH ONLY SLIGHT SCRATCHES WHICH DO NOT EFFECT PLAY.
