USED VINYL RECORD. PART OF A COLLECTION NOW UP FOR SALE.
BOB LUMAN (ROBERT GLYNN LUMAN) WAS BORN IN BLACKJACK, TEXAS BUT RAISED IN NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS. HIS EARLY INTEREST IN MUSIC WAS INFLUENCED BY IS FATHER, AN AMATEUR FIDDLE, GUITAR AND HARMONICA PLAYER. BOB RECEIVED HIS FIRST GUITAR AT THE AGE OF THIRTEEN. HE FORMED HIS FIRST BAND WHILST STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL AFTER FAILING TO MAKE IT AS A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYER. IN 1956, HE WON A TALENT CONTEST PROMOTED BY THE 'FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA' WHICH EARNED HIM AN APPEARANCE ON THE LOUISIANA HAYRIDE. FOR THE HAYRIDE, BOB FORMED A BACK-UP BAND CALLED THE SHADOWS, INCLUDING JAMES BURTON ON GUITAR, JAMES KIRKLAND ON BASS AND BUTCH WHITE ON DRUMS, BOB BECAME A REGULAR ON THE HAYRIDE AFTER JOHNNY CASH PULLED OUT OF THE CAST. DURING THAT YEAR BOB RECORDED FOR A SMALL DALLAS RECORD LABEL OPERATED BY JIM SHELL BACKED BY MAC CURTIS AND HIS BAND INCLUDING "GROOVEY" JOE POOVEY. SIX OF THOSE RECORDINGS APPEAR ON THIS ALBUM.
IN 1957, THE BAND SIGNED WITH IMPERIAL RECORDS AS THEIR ANSWER TO ELVIS PRESLEY, A ROLE LATER FILLED MORE SUCCESSFULLY BY RICKY NELSON. THE BAND RECORDED 'ALL NIGHT LONG' B/W 'RED CADILLAC AND A BLACK MOUSTACHE' AS WELL AS OTHERS. LAS VEGAS BOOKINGS FOLLOWED PLUS A PART IN A ROCK'N'ROLL MOVIE 'CARNIVAL ROCK'. BOB'S RECORDS FAILED TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS WITH IMPERIAL SO HE WAS DROPPED FROM THE LABEL AND HE THEN SIGNED WITH CAPITOL WHERE HE CONTINUED TO RECORD ROCKABILLY AND COUNTRY ROCKERS SUCH AS 'TRY ME' (ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCKERS OF ALL TIME) AND 'I KNOW MY BABY CARES'. HIS BIGGEST SUCCESS CAME IN 1960 WHEN HE SIGNED WITH WARNER BROTHERS AFTER HE LEFT CAPITOL (BECAUSE THEY WANTED HIM TO CHANGE HIS NAME BUT HE REFUSED) AND RELEASED 'LET'S THINK ABOUT LIVING' AND THEN SET HIS SIGHTS ON A CAREER IN COUNTRY MUSIC BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.
THE YEAR OF THIS RELEASE IS NOT KNOWN BUT IT APPEARS TO BE IN THE EARLY 1980s AS THE LINER NOTES REFER TO BOB'S PASSING IN 1978. THE ALBUM CONTAINS MOST OF BOB'S CAPITOL OUTPUT AS WELL, AS PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED, THE TRACKS HE RECORDED FOR JIM SHELL AND CONTAINS SOME GREAT ROCKERS. BOTH THE SLEEVE AND THE RECORD ARE IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.
