JOEY DEE (JOSEPH DI NICOLA) AND THE STARLITERS (ALSO CREDITED AS JOEY DEE AND THE STARLIGHTERS) ARE BEST KNOWN FOR THEIR MILLION SELLING RECORDING 'PEPPERMINT TWIST' (1961) THE GROUP'S MOST NOTABLE LINE-UP IS CONSIDERED TO BE JOEY DEE, DAVID BRIGATI, LARRY WERNIERI (VOCALS), CARLTON LATTIMORE (ORGAN), SAM TAYLOR (GUITAR0 AND WILLIE DAVIS (DRUMS). IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT JIMI HENDRIX AND JOE PESCI PLAYED GUITAR WITH THE GROUP AT DIFFERENT TIMES.
HOWEVER, THE GROUP'S FIRST SINGLE 'LORRAINE' B/W 'THE GIRL I WALK TO SCHOOL' WITH ROGERS FREEMAN AS LEAD SINGER ACTUALLY WAS RELEASED IN 1958, DISTRIBUTED BY THE COMPANY LITTLE. THAT SAME YEAR JOEY DEE RECRUITED DAVID BRIGATI FOR THE TEAM AND SUBSEQUENTLY JOEY AND DAVID WOULD SHARE LEAD VOCAL HONOURS WITH JOEY EVENTUALLY BECOMING THE PRIMARY LEAD SINGER. ANOTHER EARLY SINGLE FOR THE GROUP WAS 'FACE OF AN ANGEL' B/W 'SHIMMY BABY' WITH DAVID AS LEAD VOCAL WAS RELEASED ON SCEPTER RECORDS. AN ALBUM ENTITLED 'THE PEPPERMINT TWISTERS' WAS SUBSEQUENTLY RELEASED BY SCEPTER AS WELL.
JOEY DEE ORIGINALLY WANTED TO BE A HISTORY TEACHER BUT WHEN IN HIGH SCHOOL HE MASTERED THE CLARINET. A FEW MONTHS LATER JOEY ORGANIZED HIS OWN COMBO AND DID WELL AT PARTIES AND SCHOOL DANCES . WHEN THE ALTO-SAXOPHINIST LEFT THE GROUP JOEY TOOK OVER HIS CHAIR. AS THE BANDS BOOKINGS GOT BIGGER AND BIGGER JOEY DECIDED TO MAKE MUSIC HIS PROFESSION. THE BAND RECORDED SEVERAL SINGLES AS MENTIONED ABOVE THE BUT THE CHOICE WAS A WISE ONE: IN 1960 THE BAND WAS HIRED BY AN OBSCURE MANHATTAN WEST SIDE BOITE, "THE PEPPERMINT LOUNGE", AND THAT'S WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: THE CAREER OF JOEY DEE AND THE STARLITERS AND...THE TWIST! THE USUAL APPEARANCES ON THE ED SULLIVAN AND DICK CLARKS' SHOWS FOLLOWED ALONG WITH APPEARANCES IN THE MOVIE 'HEY, LET'S TWIST' FEATURING JO ANN CAMPBELL AND TEDDY RANDAZZO AND 'TWO TICKETS TO PARIS'.
THIS ALBUM CONTAINS THE GROUP'S BIGGEST HITS 'PEPPERMINT TWIST', 'YA YA', 'HOT PASTRAMI WITH MASHED POTATOES' AND 'SHOUT. PART 1.' ALONG WITH OTHER TRACKS LIFTED FROM HIS ALBUMS. BOTH THE SLEEVE AND RECORD ARE IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.
