Cat. No. VV 1113: TOMMY ROE ~ 12 IN A ROE - A COLLECTION OF TOMMY ROE'S GREATEST HITS. EMI / STATESIDE SOSL 10075.
USED VINYL RECORD. PART OF A COLLECTION NOW UP FOR SALE.
TOMMY ROE IS PROBABLY BEST-KNOWN FOR HIS HIT "SHEILA", HOWEVER, THE HIT VERSION WAS ACTUALLY A RE-RECORDING OF THE SONG WHICH TOMMY HAD WRITTEN AND RECORDED IN 1960 FOR JUD PHILLIPS' JUDD LABEL. THE ORIGINAL TITLE OF THE SONG WAS "FREDA" BUT PHILLIPS DID NOT LIKE THE TITLE AND SUGGESTED A NEW NAME SO TOMMY NAMED IT AFTER HIS AUNT SHEILA WHO WAS VISITNG AT THE TIME. THE SINGLE WAS CREDITED TO TOMMY ROE AND THE SATINS AND WAS SIMPLER THAN THE HIT VERSION WITH A STANDARD VOCAL, RHYTHM COMBO AND BACKING CHORUS. THE RECORD WAS A REGIONAL HIT BUT DID NOT CHART NATIONALLY.
TOMMY RE-RECORDED THE SONG FOR ABC-PARAMOUNT IN 1962 WITH A NEW HOOK: AN INSISTENT DRUM PARADIDDLE MODELED ON THE 1957 HIT "PEGGY SUE". ROE'S SLIGHT SOUTHERN ACCENT AND HIS INTERPOLATION OF A HIC-CUP IN THE VOCAL INVITED COMPARISONS WITH BUDDY HOLLY. THIS WAS DELIBERATE. PRODUCER FELTON JARVIS INSISTED THAT IT BE RECORDED THAT WAY IN AN EFFORT TO FILL A VACUUM LEFT BY THE PASSING OF BUDDY HOLLY. THE NEW ARRANGEMENT BECAME A BILLBOARD #1 HIT IN THE U.S. AND AUSTRALIA, HOWEVER, TOMMY WAS NOT PRESENTED WITH A GOLD DISC UNTIL 1969 WHEN A BUILD-UP OF GLOBAL SALES SATISFIED THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A GOLD DISC.
IN 1963, TOMMY FOLLOWED UP WITH FURTHER HITS IN "EVERYBODY" AND "THE FOLK SINGER". IN 1966 HE SCORED ANOTHER TWO HITS WITH "SWEET PEA" AND "HOORAY FOR HAZEL". IN 1969, HIS SONG "DIZZY" WENT TO #1 IN THE UK, CANADA AND THE U.S. SELLING OVER TWO MILLION COPIES GIVING TOMMY HIS THIRD GOLD DISC. HIS FINAL TOP 10 SINGLE CAME IN 1970, TITLED "JAM UP & JELLY TIGHT" GIVING TOMMY HIS FOURTH GOLD DISC. TOMMY ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT IN 2018 BUT HAS SINCE RETURNED TO THE OLDIES CIRCUIT.
THIS ALBUM IS AN AUSTRALIAN RELEASE THROUGH EMI AUSTRALIA AND CONTAINS ALL HIS HIT RECORDS PLUS SEVERAL OTHERS THAT WERE NEAR MISSES. THE SLEEVE IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH SOME MINOR WEAR AROUND THE EDGES AND SOME MINOR SOILING. THE RECORD IS IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.
TRACK LISTING: Side 1 - Sheila / Everybody / The Folk Singer / Party Girl / Carol / Sweet Pea. Side 2 - Hooray For Hazel / It's Now A Winter's Day / Dizzy / Heather Honey / Jack And Jill / Jam Up & Jelly Tight.
