Cat. No. VV 1130: RICHARD BERRY ~ GET OUT OF THE CAR. ACE RECORDS / KENT KLP 4001
USED VINYL RECORD. PART OF A COLLECTION NOW UP FOR SALE.
RICHARD BERRY WOULD HAVE TO BE ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED RHYTHM & BLUES VOCALISTS TO EMERGE DURING THE '50s. HIS DEEP VOICE WAS USED BY MANY AN R&B GROUP DURING THE '50s AND INTO THE '60s WHERE A DEEP VOICE WAS NEEDED TO SET THE SOUND THE GROUP WAS AFTER. HE HAD ATTENDED JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL IN LOS ANGELES WHERE HE BECAME INTERESTED IN WRITING SONGS AND PLAYING PIANO. HE COLLABORATED WITH HIS FRIEND, THE LATE JESSE BELVIN, ON MANY COMPOSITIONS AND WHILE AT SCHOOL HE FORMED A VOCAL GROUP WITH ARTHUR LEE MAYE, THOMAS FOX, YOUNG JESSIE AND A. V. ODUM. MAYE AND ODUM WERE SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED WITH CORNELL GUNTER AND BEVERLY THOMPSON RESPECTIVELY AND BECAME KNOWN AS 'THE DEBONAIRES'.
THE GROUP LATER BECAME 'THE FLAIRS' AFTER SIGNING WITH MODERN RECORD'S SUBSIDIARY, FLAIR. AS WELL AS SINGING WITH 'THE FLAIRS' RICHARD WAS CONTRACTED TO MAKE SOLO SIDES FOR THE COMPANY AND HIS VOICE WAS USED ON MANY AN R&B RECORDING. FOR EXAMPLE, HE SLID OFF TO SING ON 'THE ROBINS' "RIOT IN CELL BLOCK NO. 9" AND BECAME HENRY ON ETTA JAMES' "GOOD ROCKIN' DADDY". APART FROM HIS SOLO RECORDINGS HE ALSO SANG WITH A GIRL GROUP, 'THE DREAMERS' AND LATER SIGNED ONTO THE FLIP LABEL WITH HIS NEW GROUP 'THE PHAROAHS' WITH WHOM HE RECORDED THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF "LOUIE LOUIE".
THIS ALBUM COMPRISES TRACKS RECORDED BY RICHARD COMPILED FROM THE VARIOUS LABELS HE RECORDED FOR AND CONTAINS SOME FABULOUS R&B TRACKS. BOTH THE SLEEVE AND THE RECORD ARE AS CLOSE TO MINT AS YOU CAN GET. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNS OF WEAR OR SOILING.
