Cat. No. 2644: RAY COLUMBUS AND THE INVADERS ~ THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION. ZODIAC ZCD4009
RAY COLUMBUS AND THE INVADERS WERE FORMED IN CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND IN 1963 AND DISBANDED IN LATE 1965. THEIR REPERTOIRE WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY THE BRITISH BEAT SOUND SWEEPING THE WORLD WITH THE ONSLAUGHT OF THE BEATLES AND THE MERSEY SOUND. THEY DID NOT RECORD PROLIFICALLY BUT IN THEIR SHORT RECORDING PERIOD PUT OUT A HANDFUL OF SINGLES AND TWO ALBUMS. THEY WERE THE FIRST NEW ZEALAND BAND TO HAVE A #1 IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, AUSTRALIA, WITH THEIR COVER OF THE SENATORS’ SONG “SHE’S A MOD” WHICH EXPLODED FROM EVERY AUSTRALIAN MUSIC RADIO STATION THROUGHOUT 1964. ON THIS 2 CD SET THEY TACKLE HITS OF THE DAY AS WELL AS SEVERAL ROCK’N’ROLL HITS AND A COUPLE OF INSTRUMENTALS QUITE ADEQUATELY. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE WOULD BE THE FOUR “LIVE” RECORDINGS TO CLOSE OFF CD2 WHICH ARE OF REASONABLY POOR QUALITY BUT I GUESS IF YOU HAVE A DEFINITIVE COLLECTION THEN THEY MUST BE INCLUDED. EXCELLENT 2CD SET OF EARLY TO MID ‘60S STYLE OF BEAT MUSIC.
