REVIEW: Dashing Errol Flynn duels his way across medieval England in this lavish, witty, fast-paced retelling of the Robin Hood legend. The Adventures Of Robin Hood abounds with vivid scenes of derring-do: Robin battling a horde of Norman knights, narrowly escaping the hangman’s noose, splitting his rival’s arrow to win a suspenseful archery contest, or the Merry Men leaping from trees swords ready – to liberate a tax shipment. The best action scene is saved for last: the dazzling climatic duel to the death between Robin and Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone). Flynn who did many of his own stunts is at his athletic, romantic best in a role originally intended for James Cagney. Olivia de Havilland (as Maid Marian), consummate screen villans Rathbone and Claude Rains and a boisterous who’s who of character actors as the Merry Men co-star.
