REVIEW: Part I of a two part documentary covering the history of the blues music from the early years up to 1993 when this film was released. The documentary shows a sad indictment of the treatment of black Americans from the time of the arrival of the first Negro slaves. Narration is interspersed with some very rare performances by many of the blues and jazz artists that are household names today. Please note that much of the footage is of vintage age and varies from poor to v. good. Includes the only known footage of Leadbelly performing. Most performances are complete. An absolute must for all music fans.
PERFORMANCES: Son House – Levee Blues / Leadbelly – Pick A Bale Of Cotton / Bessie Smith – St. Louis Blues / Mamie Smith – Lord, Lord, Lord / Harlem Blues / Roy Milton (featuring June Richmond) – Hey Lawdy Mama / Jimmy Rushing – Take Me Back Baby / Ethel Waters (with Count Basie Orch.) – Quicksand / “Big” Bill Broonzy – Guitar Shuffle / Son House – Walking Blues.
