REVIEW: For many years Australian rock’n’roll fans have been asking the question why hasn’t there been video releases of all the old Australian Bandstand TV shows. There has, of course, been various legal difficulties in releasing all the old shows to the public but at last those difficulties have been overcome and nearly all of the original Australian Bandstand programs from the late fifties on wards are now available to the public. Hosted by Brian Henderson we see Australian music in it’s infancy and at times very amateurish. To date 18 volumes have been released, nine volumes dedicated to direct performances from the show by Australia’s leading rock’n’roll artists of the ‘50s and ‘60s such as Col Joye, Lucky Starr, Robyn Alvarez, The Allen Brothers, Judy Stone, Laurel Lea, The De Kroo Brothers, Patsy Ann Noble, Noeleen Batley, Warren Williams, The Delltones, Pam Liverside, Johnny Devlin, Rod Devlin, Paul Wayne, Digger Revell and The Denvermen and many many many more, and the remaining nine volumes dedicated to special shows mainly involving international artists such as Herman’s Hermits, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Lisa Minelli, The Hollies, Cilla Black, The Shadows as well as specials on Australian artists The Bee Gees, The Easybeats, Johnny Farnham, Little Pattie, The De Kroo Brothers, Olivia Newton John and the list goes on.
Volume 1 features 10 classic episodes from 1960-1962 across 3 DVDs including classy performances from Johnny Devlin, Bobby Vee, Neil Sedaka, Digger Revell and many more. This list of performances is to numerous to list here, over eighty performances and interviews but digs deep into the ‘60s songbook and delivers a treasure trove of hits and highlights – loaded with live sponsor spots for Kreisler Transistors, Coca Cola, and Clearasil, swinging dance medleys and album giveaways, culminating with a celebration of the 1961 Bandstand Awards.
Special Note: Due to the huge number of performances encased in these DVDs it is not possible to list every performance. Some performances may also be repeated in further volumes.
