Cat. No. 2813: DAVE HOLE ~ SHORT FUSE BLUES. BLACK CAT BCD1001.
DAVE HOLE EMIGRATED TO PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM WITH HIS FAMILY WHEN HE WAS JUST FOUR YEARS OF AGE. HE BECAME INTERESTED IN BLUES MUSIC WHEN HE WAS SIX YEARS OF AGE AFTER HEARING A SCHOOL FRIEND'S MUDDY WATERS ALBUM. AT TWELVE YEARS OLD HE RECEIVED HIS FIRST GUITAR AND STARTED TO TEACH HIMSELF DUE TO THE LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF TEACHERS. HE USED THE ALBUMS OF ERIC CLAPTON, JIMI HENDRIX, BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, SKIP JAMES, BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON AND OTHERS TO LEARN. HE LATER USED WORK OF ROBERT JOHNSON, ELMORE JAMES AND MISSISSIPPI FRED McDOWELL. DAVE IS LEFT-HANDED BUT HE SWITCHED TO PLAYING GUITAR RIGHT-HANDED AFTER BREAKING A FINGER IN A FOOTBALL ACCIDENT. THIS CAUSED DAVE TO DEVELOP THE WAY OF JAMMING A SLIDE ON HIS DAMAGED LEFT INDEX FINGER AND HANGING IT OVER THE TOP OF THE GUITAR. WHILST IT WAS AN AWKWARD WAY TO PLAY GUITAR EVENTUALLY WHEN THE CAST CAME OFF IT HAD BECOME THE NATURAL WAY FOR HIM TO PLAY.
IN 1965, DAVE FORMED HIS FIRST GROUP, "BROKEN HABITS" WHICH INCLUDED DARYL UPSON ON BASS GUITAR. THE FOLLOWING YEAR HE CREATED THE EARLIEST VERSION OF "DAVE HOLE BAND" WITH UPSON, DENIS CRAKE ON VOCALS AND JIM MORRIS ON DRUMS. OVER THE YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN VARIOUS LINE-UPS OF THE BAND AND AT TIMES DAVE HAS ALSO BRANCHED OUT AND PLAYED WITH OTHER BANDS. IN 1988, HE ESTABLISHED "SHORT FUSE" WITH JOHN WILSON ON BASS GUITAR AND RONNIE PARKER ON DRUMS. IN 1990 THEY RELEASED THIS ALBUM "SHORT FUSE BLUES" (ON WHICH DAVE HAS WRITTEN EIGHT OF THE TRACKS) WITH BOB PATIENT (EX-MATT TAYLOR'S CHAIN) GUESTING ON KEYBOARDS. ROCK HISTORIAN, IAN McFARLANE DESCRIBED IT AS BEING "FULL OF HOLE'S SINUOUS, HOT WIRED GUITAR WORK, WHICH EVOKED THE SPIRIT OF ELMORE JAMES AND BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON". DAVE SENT A COPY TO UNITED STATES MAGAZINE, "GUITAR PLAYER", AND ITS EDITOR, JAS OBRECHT, WROTE AN ARTICLE IN JULY 1991 PRAISING DAVE AS THE NEWEST GUITAR WIZARD AND COMPARING HIM WITH STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND ALBERT KING. EVENTUALLY A COPY OF THE ALBUM ENDED UP IN THE HANDS OF ALLIGATOR RECORDS PRESIDENT BRUCE IGLAUER WHO SIGNED UP DAVE AS THE FIRST NON-US-BASED ARTIST OF THEIR 26-YEAR HISTORY. SUPERB ELECTRIC BLUES BUT NOT FOR THOSE QUIETER MOMENTS *****
