Cat. No. 2824: LLOYD SPIEGEL ~ THIS TIME TOMORROW. ONLY BLUES MUSIC LS0417.
FOR A LONG TIME IN AUSTRALIA BLUES MUSIC HAS BEEN THE POOR COUSIN AND TALKED ABOUT IN WHISPERED TONES. IT HAS BEEN REGARDED AS PRE-WAR MUSIC BY DOWN AND OUT AFRICAN AMERICAN COTTON PICKERS WITH GRAVEL VOICES WHO COULD ONLY PLAY ONE OR TWO CHORDS ON A SECOND-HAND GUITAR REPLACED BY OVERPOWERING ELECTRIC GUITARS OF THE POST-WAR PERIOD, HOWEVER, IN THE LAST TWENTY PLUS YEARS THINGS HAVE CHANGED, THERE HAS BEEN GROWING A MASSIVE BURGEONING BLUES SCENE WITH THE ARRIVAL OF ARTISTS SUCH AS THIS ARTIST, LLOYD SPIEGEL, DAVE HOLE, FIONA BOYES, GEOFF ACHISON, BONDI CIGARS AND A HOST OF OTHER AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS LEADING THE WAY AND PICKING UP INTERNATIONAL BLUES AWARDS BY THE BAG-FULL. ALL BEING VERY COMPETENT MUSICIANS WITH THE ADDITION OF MANY VARIED INSTRUMENTS AND SONG WRITING THAT IS EXCEPTIONAL AND VARIED AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF IMPROVED RECORDING FACILITIES WE ARE SEEING SOME SPECTACULAR RESULTS. THIS ALBUM, LLOYD’S SEVENTH SOLO ALBUM, IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. RIGHT FROM THE OPENING NOTES ON VERY CREEDENCE CLEARWATER SOUNDING SWAMP STYLE “DEVIL ON MY SHOULDERS” THROUGH TO THE CLOSING TRACK “CALL YOU WHEN I GET THERE” LLOYD SPIEGEL WILL HOLD YOU SPELLBOUND. NO GRAVELLY VOCALS OR HIGH-POWERED OVERBEARING ELECTRIC GUITARS ON THIS SET JUST A WELL-BALANCED CD SET TO THE EXTENT THAT WHEN I PLAYED THIS ALBUM I RAN IT THROUGH THREE TIMES IN A ROW. LLOYD HAS PENNED NINE OF THE SONGS ON THIS ALBUM. BRILLIANT *****
